Elizabeth Longford, Countess of Longford, wrote what is still regarded as one of the most complete and readable lives of Queen Victoria. The book follows the Queen from her childhood and accession through her marriage to Prince Albert, her long widowhood and her reign as Empress of India. Reviewers praised it for balancing careful scholarship with lively, witty writing, and above all for its portrait of Victoria and Albert’s relationship.
Victoria R.I. won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for biography and has remained a standard work on the Victorian era for six decades.
