Two Miles a Minute by O. S. Nock was first published in 1980 by Patrick Stephens Limited of Bar Hill, Cambridge, and printed in Great Britain by The Garden City Press, Letchworth. It carries a foreword by Sir Peter Parker, MVO, then Chairman of British Rail, and the ISBN 0 85059 412 X.
Two Miles a Minute tells the story behind the conception and operation of Britain’s High Speed Train and the more radical Advanced Passenger Train. Nock covers the engineering and technology of the new trains, the financial thinking and timetabling behind them, how they were fitted into routes shared with freight and slower traffic, and the braking, ride and track questions that made 125 mph running possible. Details of actual runs and test performances are included, in the author’s familiar style.
O. S. Nock was one of the most prolific and respected British railway writers, a professional signalling engineer whose books on locomotive performance remain standard reading. Two Miles a Minute captures a turning point, when the InterCity 125 brought sustained high-speed running to Britain and the tilting APT promised even more.
