Cape to Cairo: One Family’s Adventures Along the Waterways of Africa is the classic expedition account by Kingsley Holgate, published by Struik Travel & Heritage, an imprint of Random House Struik, Cape Town. First published in hardcover in 2002, it appeared as a second edition softcover in 2005. This copy is the 2009 reprint of that softcover edition.
Cape to Cairo follows Kingsley, his wife Gill, their son Ross and a small band of fellow travellers as they set out to cross the African continent along its waterways, travelling by inflatable boat, sailing craft and Land Cruiser. It is illustrated with black and white photographs and Kingsley’s own journal sketches, and includes a map and an index.
Kingsley Holgate is one of South Africa’s best-loved adventurers, known for his long beard, his humanitarian expeditions and the beaded calabash he carries on his journeys. Cape to Cairo was one of the books that made his name, and it mixes adventure with history, culture and geography along the route.
This copy is signed and inscribed by the author to a previous owner. In the inscription he hopes the reader enjoys these “humble scribbles” from his 1993 expedition journal, signs off with “Siyabonga” and adds a hand-drawn calabash dated December 2009.
