Looking for Goodness: Exploring Eustace Cluver and his Family 1657-1982 by Ann Cluver Weinberg

Looking for Goodness: Exploring Eustace Cluver and his Family, South Africa 1657-1982 is Ann Cluver Weinberg’s account of Dr Eustace Cluver and the generations of the Cluver family who came before and after him. It was first published in 2008 by Sapler Press, Johannesburg, printed by Creda Communications in Gauteng and designed by Dee Helling and Sandi Arrenbrecht.

Looking for Goodness traces the family’s story across more than three centuries of South African life, from the early Cape to the twentieth century, with Eustace Cluver and his career in South African medicine at its centre. The dust jacket carries period family photographs, including a group of women graduates in academic dress and four men photographed at the entrance of a medical school.

Privately published family histories like Looking for Goodness were printed in small numbers and seldom reach the secondhand market. They record the kind of personal and professional detail that rarely appears in general histories, which makes them valuable to anyone researching South African families, medicine or social history.

A fine addition for collectors of Africana and South African biography, genealogists researching the Cluver family or early Cape settler lines, and readers interested in the history of medicine in South Africa.
