The Golden City – Johannesburg was compiled and edited by Allister Macmillan, F.R.G.S., and published in London by W. H. & L. Collingridge Ltd of 148 and 149 Aldersgate Street, who also printed the book in Great Britain. It is a large, heavy volume weighing about 2.5 kg.
The Golden City is handsomely produced. The brown embossed cloth boards carry the title and the Johannesburg coat of arms with its motto Fortiter et Recte stamped in gilt, with the title and editor’s name in gilt on the spine. Inside, the endpapers are framed with a green ruled border, and the title page is set within an ornate printed frame, with the city’s arms reproduced in colour and the publisher’s device below.
As a substantial volume devoted entirely to Johannesburg, The Golden City is a desirable reference and display piece for anyone building a library on the city and the Transvaal.
The Golden City will appeal to collectors of Africana and Transvaal history, researchers of Johannesburg and the Witwatersrand, family and local historians, and anyone looking for an impressive vintage volume on the city for their shelves.
Condition – Good
Brown embossed cloth with the gilt title, arms and spine lettering still bright. The cloth has split along the front joint at both the head and tail of the spine, with fraying at the edges of the splits, and the spine ends and corners are rubbed with some fraying. A small scuff to the front board near the spine. The binding remains intact and the text block is sound. A previous owner’s signature in ink at the top corner of the front free endpaper; light spotting to the endpapers.
