San Rock Engravings – Marking the Karoo Landscape by Neil Rusch and John Parkington was first published in 2010 by Struik Travel & Heritage, an imprint of Random House Struik, Cape Town. This copy is the first edition, first printing, with the number line running down to 1. The photographs and captions are by Neil Rusch, with the text by John Parkington.
San Rock Engravings explores the engraved images pecked and incised into rock surfaces across the Karoo, made in the pre-colonial period by San hunter-gatherers. As the jacket describes, the engravings most often show animals such as eland, quagga and elephant. Rusch’s photographs record the engravings in their landscape, while Parkington’s text considers the San, the marks they left and the meanings that may be attached to them. //Kabbo’s map is reproduced on page 14, along with quotations from /Xam San informants drawn from the Bleek and Lloyd Collection at the University of Cape Town. The endpapers reproduce portions of the Imperial Map of South Africa of April 1900.
According to the jacket flap, John Parkington is Professor of Archaeology at the University of Cape Town and is involved in the Living Landscape Project in Clanwilliam, while Neil Rusch is an independent publisher, writer and photographer. Their combined work makes San Rock Engravings – Marking the Karoo Landscape a well-presented record of an important part of South Africa’s rock art heritage.
San Rock Engravings will appeal to collectors of Africana and rock art literature, students of San archaeology and the Bleek and Lloyd archive, and anyone with a love of the Karoo and its history.
