The 1894 One Penny from the South African Republic (ZAR) is a sought-after bronze coin issued during the presidency of Paul Kruger. These early issues form part of the foundational coinage of the Transvaal and reflect the growing independence and identity of the Boer republic in the late 19th century.
The obverse features a left-facing portrait of President Paul Kruger, widely known as “Oom Paul”, surrounded by the inscription “SUID AFRIKAANSCHE REPUBLIEK” in Dutch. This iconic portrait is one of the most recognisable designs in South African numismatics.
The reverse displays the denomination “1 PENNY” within a wreath, with the date 1894 below. The clean and practical design reflects the coin’s role in everyday commerce within the republic during a period of economic development driven by mining and expansion.
Coins from this early date are particularly desirable, as they represent one of the earlier issues in the ZAR penny series. Struck in bronze and widely circulated, surviving examples are collected for their historical importance and connection to pre-Union South Africa.
