A Cape Camera -The Architectural Beauty of the Old Cape by Hans Fransen

A Cape Camera: The Architectural Beauty of the Old Cape is a visually striking and historically important work celebrating the unique architectural heritage of the Cape. Compiled and introduced by noted South African historian and architectural expert Hans Fransen, this attractive volume presents a remarkable selection of photographs drawn from the famed Arthur Elliott Collection housed in the Cape Archives.

Arthur Elliott’s photographs have long been regarded as some of the finest visual records of old Cape architecture and rural life. Through carefully composed black-and-white images, A Cape Camera captures the elegance, craftsmanship, and atmosphere of historic Cape Dutch homesteads, manor houses, werfs, gables, churches, gateways, and village scenes from a bygone era. Many of the structures featured were photographed before restoration or alteration, making this work not only visually beautiful but also an invaluable archival record of South African cultural heritage.

A Cape Camera offers readers an evocative journey through the architectural landscape of the old Cape, highlighting the distinctive blend of Dutch, Georgian, and vernacular influences that shaped the region’s built environment. Hans Fransen’s introduction provides important historical context, enhancing the appeal for collectors, historians, architects, photographers, and enthusiasts of Africana and Cape history.
