A Fisherman in the Saddle: Horse Medicine, Seawitched

A Fisherman in the Saddle: Horse Medicine, Seawitched by Julian Roup is a distinctive and unconventional South African narrative published in 2003 by Jacana Media. In A Fisherman in the Saddle, Roup blends memoir, reflection, and storytelling into a work that resists easy categorisation, offering readers a deeply personal and often philosophical journey through rural life, horsemanship, and the rhythms of the natural world.

In A Fisherman in the Saddle, the narrative moves fluidly between practical knowledge and introspective observation, particularly in its treatment of horses and “horse medicine”—a term that extends beyond veterinary care into a broader understanding of connection, instinct, and experience. Roup’s writing captures a life lived close to the land and sea, where fishing, riding, and observation form part of a larger, almost meditative engagement with the environment. The structure of A Fisherman in the Saddle reflects this organic approach, unfolding in a way that mirrors lived experience rather than conventional storytelling.

What makes A Fisherman in the Saddle especially compelling is its tone and perspective. Roup writes with quiet authority and authenticity, drawing readers into a world that is both grounded and reflective. The book offers insights into rural South African life while also exploring broader themes of independence, resilience, and the relationship between humans and animals.

A Fisherman in the Saddle is a unique addition to any collection focused on memoir, nature writing, or equestrian life. Julian Roup’s work stands apart for its originality and depth, making it a rewarding read for those seeking something thoughtful and unconventional.
