G.A. Leyds’ A History of Johannesburg: The Early Years is one of the more sought-after single-volume histories of Johannesburg’s formative years. Published in 1964 by Nasionale Boekhandel Beperk, the book traces the development of the city from the discovery of gold through the rapid growth of the Rand, blending political, social and mining history into an engaging narrative.
This first edition A History of Johannesburg: The Early Years remains an important work for collectors of Johannesburg and Transvaal history, Africana, mining history and South African urban development. Leyds drew heavily on contemporary records and family recollections, making this a particularly valuable account of the city’s earliest decades. The volume includes photographs, bibliography and index, and is increasingly difficult to find in presentable jacketed condition.
Condition – Very Good
Original brown cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine. The book remains internally clean and tightly bound. Dust jacket shows light edge wear and minor rubbing. Previous owner’s name in ink on the front endpaper, which is slightly discoloured from an old removed label or tape mark. Overall a very good copy in a good to very good dust jacket.
