1 in stock
A History of Persia by Brigadier-General Sir Percy Sykes is a comprehensive two-volume study tracing the long and complex history of Persia from antiquity through successive empires, dynasties and periods of political and cultural change. Written by one of the better-known British authorities on Persia of the early twentieth century, the work combines historical research with Sykes’s extensive personal knowledge of the region gained through military service, diplomatic work and travel.
Across the two volumes, A History of Persia examines the development of ancient Persia, including the rise of the Achaemenid Empire and figures such as Cyrus the Great, before following the country through the Parthian and Sasanian periods and into the Islamic era. Later Persian dynasties, religious movements, warfare, foreign relations and the development of Iranian political power are also explored in considerable detail.
A History of Persia is particularly notable for its discussion of Zoroastrianism and other religious traditions associated with Persia, as well as its coverage of important rulers including Shah Abbas. Numerous maps, portraits and historical illustrations accompany the text, adding considerable reference value.
This complete two-volume set will appeal to readers and collectors interested in Persian history, Iranian studies, ancient civilisations, Middle Eastern history, religion, archaeology and historical travel writing. Despite the noticeable wear and previous-owner annotations, A History of Persia remains a substantial reference set with considerable research and reading value.
Condition – Very Good
Both volumes are bound in blue cloth with gilt lettering to the spines. The covers show moderate wear, rubbing and scattered surface loss, with what appears to be previous insect damage affecting the spines. Volume II retains only a partial dust jacket, which is heavily worn with substantial loss and rubbing.
Internally there are tape marks to the endpapers, general page toning and previous-owner ink annotations, marginal notes and underlining to portions of the text. The bindings remain intact and the two-volume set is complete.
