African Bush Adventures by J.A. Hunter & Daniel P. Mannix is a classic work of African hunting and adventure literature, first published in Great Britain by Hamish Hamilton in 1954. J.A. Hunter was one of the best-known professional hunters of the twentieth century, and his accounts of life in the African bush remain of considerable interest to collectors of Africana, safari history and traditional big-game hunting literature.
Written with Daniel P. Mannix, the book recounts Hunter’s experiences among African wildlife and the hunters, settlers and personalities he encountered during his career. The narrative belongs to an era when professional hunting, game control and exploration were closely intertwined with the development of colonial East Africa. As such, African Bush Adventures now provides not only adventure reading but also a historical perspective on changing attitudes towards African wildlife and conservation.
Hunter’s career produced a number of sought-after books, and his works have established a following among collectors of African hunting literature. African Bush Adventures combines colourful personal anecdotes with descriptions of dangerous game, remote landscapes and the practical realities of working in the African bush.
This 1954 first British edition from Hamish Hamilton is particularly suitable for an Africana collection, hunting library or collection devoted to twentieth-century African travel and adventure. African Bush Adventures is also an appealing companion volume to works by other celebrated professional hunters and safari writers of the period.
