An impressive hand-carved African tribal sculpture depicting a seated male figure with his right arm raised in a gesture of greeting, authority or blessing. Expertly carved from a single piece of hardwood, this substantial sculpture displays the bold geometric forms and symbolic styling associated with traditional African tribal art. Rich in decorative detail and possessing an attractive aged patina, it is an outstanding display piece for collectors of African ethnographic art, tribal sculpture and handcrafted wooden artworks.
The African tribal seated sculpture features a distinctive coiffure with shaved sides and a raised braided Mohawk-style crest extending into long hair flowing down the back. Around the shoulders is a boldly carved decorative band projecting forward across the chest, while finely carved relief decoration adorns the hair, neck, legs and the central support of the stool. The pronounced facial features, prominent umbilicus and raised right arm give the figure a commanding yet expressive presence, while the left hand rests naturally upon the knee.
The seated figure rests upon an elaborately carved ceremonial stool standing on a substantial circular base. The edge of the base is decorated with continuous zig-zag relief carving that complements the decorative carving found throughout the sculpture, creating a balanced and visually striking composition. Measuring 41 cm high, 19 cm wide and 22 cm deep, this impressive African tribal seated sculpture makes a superb statement piece for a home, office or gallery and will appeal equally to collectors of African tribal sculpture art, ethnographic material and unique handcrafted décor.
