Africa’s Challenge – A scarce 1938 first edition pamphlet on African colonial politics by J. Hudson Stockil, printed in Durban by Knox Printing & Publishing Company.
1 in stock
Published in November 1938, Africa’s Challenge by J. Hudson Stockil is a scarce South African political and historical pamphlet printed by The Knox Printing & Publishing Company, Durban.
Stockil, best known for his earlier work Siyangapi?, was a controversial commentator on colonial policy and African affairs during the late British colonial period in Southern Africa. In Africa’s Challenge he discusses the social, political, and economic “challenges” facing Africa during the late 1930s, reflecting contemporary colonial viewpoints and debates surrounding governance, development, and race relations in the region.
Africa’s Challenge is typical of small regional printings of the period and is now increasingly collected for its historical insight into pre-World War II South African political thought. Copies rarely appear on the market, particularly in their original paper wrappers.
A fascinating and increasingly scarce piece of South African historical commentary from the late colonial era.
Condition – Very Good
Original printed paper wrappers. The book remains complete and internally clean with light age toning to the paper. The front cover shows visible wear with a tear/puncture to the right side and a small stain near the lower corner, consistent with age and handling. There is prior ownership in ink on the endpaper. Despite these faults the text block remains sound and fully legible.
