Allan Quatermain is H. Rider Haggard’s celebrated sequel to King Solomon’s Mines, first published in 1887. This copy is the 1936 Hodder and Stoughton edition, made and printed in Great Britain by C. Tinling and Co. of Liverpool, London and Prescot. It is a compact hardcover in the publisher’s red cloth, with the title, author and publisher stamped in black on the decorated spine and the publisher’s device blind-stamped on the front board.
The title page sits within an attractive decorative border and carries Haggard’s well-known motto, “Ex Africa semper aliquid novi”. The full subtitle describes the book as an account of Quatermain’s further adventures and discoveries in company with Sir Henry Curtis, Commander John Good and one Umslopogaas.
In Allan Quatermain the ageing hunter, grieving the loss of his son, returns to the African interior with his old companions. Joined by the formidable Zulu warrior Umslopogaas, they go in search of a hidden white civilisation, the kingdom of Zu-Vendis, and become caught up in a bitter rivalry between two sister queens. Haggard drew on his own years in Natal and the Transvaal, and the novel remains a cornerstone of the lost world adventure genre that later inspired writers from Edgar Rice Burroughs to Wilbur Smith.
Allan Quatermain is a pleasing pre-war copy for readers of classic adventure fiction, collectors of Haggard and anyone building a shelf of vintage African adventure novels. Its bright red cloth gives it good shelf appeal.
Condition – Good
Hardcover without dust jacket. The publisher’s red cloth boards show tide-marks and pale moisture staining to the front and rear. The spine is sunned and stained, though the black lettering and decoration remain fully legible. Light rubbing to the extremities with slight wear to the spine ends. A previous owner’s ink inscription appears on the front pastedown. The page edges are darkened, with light scattered foxing throughout and some spotting to the endpapers. The binding is sound and the text complete, making this a solid reading copy of Allan Quatermain.
