Henry Wiencek’s An Imperfect God is a powerful and thought-provoking examination of George Washington and his complex relationship with slavery. Drawing on letters, diaries and newly interpreted historical evidence, Wiencek explores the contradictions between Washington’s public ideals of liberty and his private ownership of enslaved people. The book offers a compelling reassessment of the foundations of America and the moral struggles that shaped its first president.
This 2004 Macmillan hardcover edition is an important work of American history and biography, ideal for collectors of presidential history, slavery studies, and early American politics. The black cloth boards with gilt spine lettering remain very good, and the unclipped dust jacket presents well despite minor wear. A desirable reading and research copy of An Imperfect God for anyone interested in the hidden realities behind the creation of the United States.
