Anatomy for the Artist by acclaimed artist and teacher Sarah Simblet, with photography by John Davis, is an outstanding visual reference for artists seeking a deeper understanding of the structure, movement and proportions of the human body. First published by DK in 2001, this substantial illustrated guide combines artistic instruction, anatomical study, life drawing and striking photography to create a practical resource for students, professional artists and anyone interested in figurative art.
Simblet explores the human form from both an artistic and anatomical perspective, examining the skeleton, muscles and underlying structures that determine the body’s visible shape and movement. Specially commissioned photographs are combined with detailed drawings, including ingenious anatomical illustrations that relate internal structures directly to the photographed figure. Anatomy for the Artist also incorporates practical drawing classes covering important areas such as the skeleton, head, ribcage, pelvis, hands and feet.
Historical and contemporary artworks further demonstrate how artists have interpreted human anatomy, proportion, balance, posture and movement. This combination of fine-art reference, photography and practical instruction makes Anatomy for the Artist particularly useful for figure drawing, painting, illustration and art studies.
