Anatomy of the SS State by Helmut Krausnick, Hans Buchheim, Martin Broszat and Hans-Adolf Jacobsen is a substantial and important scholarly study of the SS and the machinery of repression and persecution within Nazi Germany. Originally published in German as Anatomie des SS-Staates in 1965, this 1968 Collins edition is the first English edition, translated by Richard Barry, Marian Jackson and Dorothy Long, with an introduction by historian Elizabeth Wiskemann.
Extending to 614 pages, the book examines the organisation, development and operation of the SS under the National Socialist regime. Its major subjects include the persecution of the Jews, the SS as an instrument of political domination, the relationship between command and obedience, the concentration camp system from 1933 to 1945, and German policies concerning Soviet prisoners of war during the Second World War.
Anatomy of the SS State has particular historical importance because its origins lie in expert evidence prepared by historians of the Institut für Zeitgeschichte in connection with the Frankfurt Auschwitz trials. Rather than being a popular narrative history, it is a detailed academic examination of the institutions, structures and mechanisms that enabled Nazi persecution and mass murder.
This original 1968 Collins hardcover Anatomy of the SS State is an excellent addition to a serious collection of Second World War history, Holocaust studies, Third Reich history, German military and political history, or twentieth-century European history. Early English-language copies are considerably more collectable than later paperback reprints.
