The Early Annals of Kokstad and Griqualand East by William Dower is an important and increasingly collectable work of South African Africana, documenting the early history of the Griqua people and the development of Kokstad and Griqualand East. Originally published in Port Elizabeth by Jas. Kemsley & Co. in 1902, this 1978 Killie Campbell Africana Library edition reproduces the original work while adding an introduction, notes and index by historian Christopher Saunders.
Dower was closely connected with the establishment of Kokstad, giving his account particular historical significance. Early Annals of Kokstad and Griqualand East traces the history and movements of the Griqua Nation, including their migration from the Northern Cape through Philippolis and eventually into the territory that became Griqualand East.
This expanded facsimile edition contains historical illustrations, portraits and additional scholarly material, making Early Annals of Kokstad and Griqualand East particularly useful to collectors and researchers of South African history. Importantly, the folding map of Griqualand East in the 1870s remains present at the rear of this copy. The map shows Kokstad, Mount Currie, Matatiele, Umzimkulu, Pondoland, Alfred County and surrounding territories.
Condition – Fair
The green hardcover binding itself remains in very good condition, with attractive gilt lettering to the spine and only light general shelf wear. Internally the book remains sound, although there is a previous owner’s name and Kokstad address written on the front endpaper.
The original dust jacket is present but is fair and considerably worn, with age-toning, staining and spotting, edge wear, small losses and tears, particularly around the extremities. There is substantial deterioration and staining to the inner/reverse surface of the jacket, especially along the lower edge. The folding map at the rear is complete and still present, with some spotting and slight wear and small tears/chipping to the outer edges.
