Avalanche! by John Hill is an uncommon specialist aviation title offering an engaging account centred on helicopters, operational flying and the demanding circumstances encountered by those involved in rotary-wing aviation. Published in Canada in 2007 by Yokebreakers Unlimited, this independently published work will be of particular interest to collectors of helicopter literature, military and operational aviation, aviation memoirs and less commonly encountered first-hand accounts.
Helicopter operations require an unusual combination of technical skill, judgement and adaptability, particularly when conducted in mountainous or otherwise challenging environments. Avalanche! captures this specialised world, exploring the human experiences behind the aircraft and providing aviation enthusiasts with an absorbing perspective on the realities of helicopter flying.
The striking cover, featuring the silhouette of a helicopter against a mountainous landscape, reflects the dramatic subject matter within. As a relatively obscure small-press publication, Avalanche! is considerably less commonly encountered than mainstream commercial aviation titles and represents an interesting addition to a specialist aviation collection.
Of particular significance, this copy of Avalanche! has been personally inscribed and signed by the author, John Hill. The inscription reads “Blessings, Nick!”, followed by the author’s signature/name, “John”, and is dated 20th December 2009. This dated author inscription, approximately two years after the book’s original publication, adds an attractive association and collectable element to this particular copy.
An appealing signed example for collectors of aviation literature, helicopter history, operational flying, military aviation and author-inscribed books.
