Baobab Trails: An Artist’s Journey of Wilderness and Wanderings is an engaging autobiographical journey by renowned South African conservationist, wildlife artist and author Clive Walker, written with Sally Antrobus. Published by Jacana Media in 2013, the book draws together decades of Walker’s experiences in the African wilderness, combining personal memoir, travel, natural history and an enduring fascination with one of Africa’s most extraordinary trees – the baobab.
Baobabs form a natural trail through Walker’s wanderings across southern Africa, providing the framework for a broader story of landscapes, wildlife, conservation and the remarkable people encountered along the way. These ancient trees have witnessed generations of human and natural history, and Walker uses them as both physical landmarks and evocative symbols of the African wilderness.
Baobab Trails reflects Walker’s extensive experience as an artist and conservationist and his lifelong involvement with African wildlife and wilderness preservation. His travels and conservation work brought him into contact with many prominent figures in the field while giving him first-hand experience of some of southern Africa’s most significant natural areas.
Illustrated with Walker’s own photographs, Baobab Trails offers considerably more than a study of baobab trees. It is a personal record of exploration, conservation and changing African landscapes, told by someone whose life has been closely connected with the natural environment.
An appealing addition to collections devoted to South African natural history, African trees, wildlife conservation, travel, environmental history and Africana.
