Birds of Malawi: A Supplement to Newman’s Birds of Southern Africa by Kenneth Newman, Nigel Johnston-Stewart and Bob Medland is a specialised African ornithological reference designed to complement Kenneth Newman’s well-known field guide to the birds of Southern Africa. Published in 1992, this compact first-edition paperback provides birdwatchers, naturalists and researchers with dedicated coverage of Malawi’s distinctive avifauna.
Birds of Malawi addresses the species occurring in Malawi that were not described in Newman’s Birds of Southern Africa, making it particularly useful for anyone travelling or birding beyond the traditional southern African coverage area. The main section provides descriptions of 74 additional species, accompanied by Kenneth Newman’s colour bird illustrations and distribution maps. A further checklist covers the birds recorded from Malawi and supplies useful information regarding their status, distribution and preferred habitats.
At approximately 110 pages, Birds of Malawi was deliberately produced as a practical companion volume rather than a large general reference work. Its manageable format makes it suitable for field use while retaining considerable value as a reference for African ornithology collections.
This title has particular appeal to collectors of Kenneth Newman bird books, southern and central African field guides, Malawi natural history, African ornithology and vintage birding literature. As a geographically specialised supplement from the early 1990s, Birds of Malawi is also a useful addition to collections attempting to document the development of bird identification literature in southern Africa.
