Black As I Am

Black As I Am is a powerful poetry collection by Zindzi Mandela, daughter of Nelson and Winnie Mandela, first published in 1978 by The Guild of Tutors Press. These poems, deeply rooted in the social and political challenges of apartheid-era South Africa, convey the voice of a young Black woman grappling with identity, struggle, hope and loss. Zindzi’s lyrical style weaves personal experience with communal anguish, resistance and aspiration, making the collection both intimate and universal.

Photographer Peter Mugabe contributes to the edition with solemn and contemplative black-and-white images that reflect the emotional landscape of Zindzi’s verse. The visual accompaniment gives physical presence to her words — faces, places, protest and ordinary life captured in quiet intensity. A foreword by U.S. civil rights leader Andrew Young adds historical resonance, linking South Africa’s struggle to global movements for justice and human dignity. Young’s insight frames Zindzi’s work as both personal testimony and political art.

Black As I Am remains a culturally and historically precious document. For students of South African literature, activists, poetry lovers and collectors of political writing, the book offers a rare glimpse of intimate resistance. Zindzi Mandela’s poems bridge generational memory and creative defiance, and this earlier edition is particularly significant given her later role in South Africa’s evolving political landscape.
