British Railway Signalling by G. M. Kichenside and Alan Williams was first published in 1963. This is the fourth edition, published in 1978 by Ian Allan Ltd of Shepperton, Surrey, and printed by The Press at Coombelands, Addlestone. It is bound in pictorial laminated boards.
The book explains how British railway signalling works for the general reader and enthusiast. Its chapters cover the principles and equipment of signalling, colour-light signals, signalbox operation, signalling diagrams in colour, automatic warning systems and automatic train control, emergency working, other signalling systems and the future of signalling. Appendices list the signalbox bell codes and lever colours.
Signalling is the part of the railway most enthusiasts find hardest to understand, and Kichenside and Williams’s book became a standard introduction that ran through several editions. This copy was sold new by Adams & Co., the Durban booksellers and stationers, whose ticket remains on the front pastedown, a nice South African touch.
It will be useful to railway enthusiasts, modellers who want to signal their layouts correctly, students of railway operation and safety, and collectors of Ian Allan titles.
Condition – Good
