Brown’s Knots and Splices: With Tables of Strengths of Ropes, Etc. and Wire Rigging by Captain Jutsum is a classic practical handbook of traditional seamanship, ropework and rigging. Published in Glasgow in 1948 by renowned nautical publishers Brown, Son & Ferguson, this revised and enlarged edition provides a fascinating combination of practical instruction and period maritime reference material.
Written for those working with rope and rigging, Brown’s Knots and Splices explains the construction and practical application of numerous knots, bends, hitches and splices. Subjects include the construction of ropes, methods of joining and securing ropes, splicing, whipping, tackles and purchases, wire rope and other essential elements of traditional seamanship. Numerous diagrams and illustrations accompany the instructions, making the techniques considerably easier to understand and reproduce.
This compact handbook is particularly appealing today as both a usable reference and a piece of maritime history. Its content reflects an era when competent ropework remained an essential skill aboard commercial and working vessels. Brown’s Knots and Splices will appeal to sailors, yachtsmen, maritime historians, nautical collectors, Sea Scout enthusiasts, traditional craftspeople and anyone interested in knots, rigging and historical seamanship.
The original 1948 edition is considerably more collectable than readily available modern reproductions of Brown’s Knots and Splices and would make an interesting addition to a specialist nautical or maritime library.
