Buried in the Sky by Rick Andrew

Buried in the Sky by Rick Andrew is a powerful South African military narrative that explores the emotional and psychological realities of the Border War and the Angolan conflict of 1976. Written by a former conscript himself, Andrew presents a deeply human collection of interconnected stories that move beyond traditional battlefield action to focus on the men and women shaped by war, memory and survival.

Set partly in the present and partly during the dust-filled operations in Angola, Buried in the Sky vividly recreates the atmosphere experienced by South African soldiers stationed far from home. Through memorable characters such as Manie Dippenaar, Private Smith and Spek, the author reflects on boredom, fear, revenge, friendship and the search for meaning in a conflict many young conscripts barely understood. The writing combines humour, tension and poignancy, giving readers an intimate glimpse into life on the Border.

This title holds strong appeal for collectors of South African military history, Border War literature and Africana. Buried in the Sky also resonates with readers interested in personal war memoirs and fictionalised accounts rooted in real historical experiences. Penguin’s South African edition has become increasingly sought after among collectors of modern South African military fiction and post-apartheid reflections on service and identity.

An important addition to any collection focusing on the South African Border War, Angola, military fiction or contemporary South African literature.
