A scarce South African political lecture pamphlet titled “Can Africa Come of Age?”, delivered as The Sixteenth Hoernlé Memorial Lecture by historian Prof. C. W. de Kiewiet, then President of the University of Rochester.
Can Africa Come of Age was presented on 7 July 1960 at the University of Natal in Durban under the auspices of the South African Institute of Race Relations (SAIRR). Written at a critical moment in African and South African history, shortly after the wave of African independence movements and during the early years of apartheid, the lecture examines the political, social and economic prospects of the African continent.
Pamphlets from the Hoernlé Memorial Lecture series are increasingly collected for their importance in documenting mid-20th century South African intellectual and political debate, particularly relating to race relations, colonialism and the emergence of independent African states.
This example remains a collectible historical document despite its modest condition and would appeal to collectors of South African political history, apartheid-era publications, African studies and SAIRR material.
Condition – Good
Covers worn with spine worn through in places. Staples rusted. Foxing visible on pages facing the covers. Internally complete and legible. A fragile but historically interesting copy.
