Canework by Charles Crampton is a classic practical guide to the traditional craft of cane and basket-making, written by an experienced craftsman and teacher. Published by The Dryad Press of Leicester, this Twenty-first Edition from 1970 reflects the enduring popularity of a manual that went through numerous editions and impressions during the twentieth century.
Crampton combines practical instruction with useful historical background, beginning with an introduction to the history of basket-making and notes on cane, its properties and its uses. Canework then moves into the techniques required for working with cane, providing guidance suitable for both students of traditional crafts and readers interested in learning basketry at home.
Topics include methods of weaving, the construction of borders, different types of basket handles, trays and baskets with wooden bases, baskets constructed with cane bases, and methods for lining finished cane baskets. Canework also considers the teaching of cane basketry and provides a structured approach to developing skills. Numerous illustrations and diagrams help explain the various processes and construction methods.
An appealing vintage craft reference, Canework is particularly suitable for collectors of traditional handicraft books, basket makers, furniture and craft enthusiasts, teachers of practical crafts, and anyone interested in the history and techniques of cane weaving. The attractive red cloth binding with gilt lettering also gives this vintage Dryad edition considerable period character.
