At the Edge – and other Cato Manor Stories is a collection of short stories by Ronnie Govender, set in the Cato Manor community of Durban. This copy is the second edition, published in 2001 by Manx of Pretoria, an imprint of Hibbard Publishers. The book was first published in soft cover in 1996, and the second edition was printed by CTP Book Printers of Parow, Cape Town.
The stories take their setting from Cato Manor and the people who lived there, and the cover sets the tone with three black and white photographs from the Local History Museum Collection in Durban: a man outside a corrugated-iron home, a street of houses, and a crowd gathered at an outdoor event. The cover design is by Fairlane Studios of Pretoria.
As a work of South African fiction rooted in a specific Durban community, At the Edge sits naturally alongside other writing on KwaZulu-Natal’s social history. It offers a view of everyday life in Cato Manor through fiction rather than formal history.
This copy will appeal to readers of South African literature and short stories, those with an interest in Durban and KwaZulu-Natal, and collectors of locally published fiction.
