A Personal Record of Some Incidents in the Life of Cecil Rhodes is Vere Stent’s first-hand account of Cecil John Rhodes. This hardcover was published by Books of Rhodesia in Bulawayo in 1970 as a reprint of the 1925 edition, with additional illustrations, and was printed in Rhodesia by Mardon Printers.
The book was reissued as part of the Books of Rhodesia series of Rhodesiana reprints. A note in the front explains that the republication was made possible by two Rhodesians of a pioneer family, and the book is dedicated to the Rhodesia Pioneers’ and Early Settlers’ Society, to honour the men and women who pioneered the country and to promote interest in its history.
Rather than a full biography, A Personal Record of Some Incidents in the Life of Cecil Rhodes records the episodes the author witnessed himself, which gives it a directness that later histories cannot match. It remains a useful source for anyone studying Rhodes and the early years of Rhodesia.
The Books of Rhodesia reprints are well liked by collectors of Rhodesiana, and this title will appeal to readers of Southern African history, students of the colonial period and anyone building a shelf of Rhodes literature.
Condition – Near Fine
Hardcover bound in brown cloth with gilt titling on the front board and spine, both still very good. Housed in the original dust jacket, which is in very good condition with some edge wear and some fading. Some foxing is present, otherwise the book is in excellent condition with a firm binding.
