A scarce complete three-volume set of Cedara Memoirs on South African Agriculture (1909–1912), edited by E. R. Sawer. These important early South African agricultural studies cover cereal cultivation, livestock experiments, the Natal sugar industry, tea cultivation, fibre crops and tobacco production. Retaining their original publisher’s cloth bindings and complete with all plates and tables, this uncommon set is an invaluable resource for collectors of Africana, Natal history and agricultural science.
A scarce and increasingly difficult to find complete three-volume set of the landmark Cedara Memoirs on South African Agriculture, edited by E. R. Sawer and published between 1909 and 1912 in Pietermaritzburg, Natal. Produced under the auspices of the Department of Agriculture, these substantial works document some of the earliest systematic agricultural research undertaken in South Africa and remain important reference sources for historians, agricultural researchers, Africana collectors and institutions.
Cedara Memoirs Volume I (1909) contains detailed reports on experiments in the cultivation of cereals in South Africa and includes extensive statistical data, tables and illustrations.
Cedara Memoirs Volume II (1911) focuses on feeding crops and livestock experiments, providing valuable insight into early agricultural practices and scientific farming methods.
Cedara Memoirs Volume III (1912) covers the sugar industry of Natal, tea cultivation in Natal, fibre crops and tobacco culture, making it particularly desirable for collectors of Natal and KwaZulu-Natal history.
Cedara Memoirs on South African Agriculture contains all plates and tables called for and remains a significant primary source documenting the development of South African agriculture during the early twentieth century.
Publications of this nature were generally issued in relatively small numbers and many surviving copies are now held in institutional collections.
Cedara Memoirs on South African Agriculture retain their original green cloth bindings with gilt lettering to the spines and decorative black ruled borders to the boards. The survival of the complete set in matching original bindings considerably enhances its collectability. An important and uncommon piece of South African agricultural, scientific and Natal history.
