Centuries of Childhood is Philippe Ariès’s history of childhood and family life, translated from the French by Robert Baldick. This copy was published in London by Jonathan Cape in 1962, the year the book was first published in Great Britain. The original French work, L’Enfant et la vie familiale sous l’ancien régime, appeared through Librairie Plon in Paris in 1960.
Centuries of Childhood traces how the idea of the child changed from the Middle Ages to the end of the eighteenth century. Drawing on paintings, school records, private journals and other sources, Ariès follows the shift from children being treated as small adults once out of the cradle to the child becoming the focal point of family life. He examines the scholastic life of children and the growth of modern education, then turns to the family itself, as it changed from an open, public unit into a private household centred on its children.
Centuries of Childhood is bound in purple cloth with gilt lettering and the Cape urn device on the spine, and is protected by its original dust jacket designed by Germano Facetti, with the 42s. net price on the front flap. It was printed in Great Britain by J. and J. Gray of Edinburgh on paper made by John Dickinson and Co, and bound by A. W. Bain and Co of London.
Ariès, born in Blois in 1914 and educated at the Sorbonne, made social history his special interest, and Centuries of Childhood is the book that carried his name to English readers. An early British hardcover in its jacket will appeal to historians, educators, students of the family and sociology, and collectors of landmark works of social history.
Condition – Good
A good hardcover showing moderate to heavy wear to the edges of the boards. The dust jacket is in good condition, with chips and heavy wear around the edges. Foxing and patchy discolouration are present.
