Childhood in Crossroads: Cognition and Society in South Africa by Pamela Reynolds is an important South African anthropological and social study examining childhood, cognition and everyday life within the Crossroads community near Cape Town during the apartheid era.
Based on Reynolds’s ethnographic research among seven-year-old Xhosa children, the book documents the experiences of children growing up in Crossroads, then an informal settlement approximately twenty kilometres from central Cape Town. Reynolds lived within the community while conducting her research, allowing her to examine childhood from within its particular social, cultural and political environment. Childhood in Crossroads combines approaches from anthropology and psychology to investigate how children understand and organise their worlds.
Subjects explored include children’s concepts of space and order, kinship and family relationships, play, dreams, learning and cognitive development. Childhood in Crossroads also considers the usefulness and limitations of conventional psychological testing when applied across different cultural and social settings. The result is both a study of childhood development and a valuable historical record of life within a Black South African community during apartheid.
First published in 1989, Childhood in Crossroads remains particularly relevant to readers and researchers interested in South African anthropology, developmental psychology, sociology, childhood studies, Xhosa communities, apartheid-era social history and urban informal settlements. Reynolds subsequently became a prominent academic in social anthropology, and this work grew from her doctoral research conducted in Crossroads between 1979 and 1981.
