Subtraction by South African photographer Clinton Friedman is a striking large-format photographic monograph exploring the extraordinary forms, textures and visual character of indigenous medicinal plants. Published in 2007, the book developed from Friedman’s photographic investigation of plants encountered in traditional muti markets in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
Rather than presenting conventional botanical studies, Clinton Friedman isolates his subjects and draws attention to their sculptural qualities. Dried, cut, twisted and transformed plant material becomes the focus of bold photographic compositions, revealing intricate structures that might otherwise be overlooked. The resulting images combine botanical interest, contemporary photography and distinctly South African cultural context.
Clinton Friedman’s work is particularly recognised for its strong use of organic form, colour and texture, and Subtraction represents an important early expression of the visual language that became closely associated with his later art and design work. The photographs were produced using traditional photographic methods rather than relying on digital manipulation, giving the collection a particularly direct and carefully observed quality.
Text is contributed by Siobhan Gunning and Clinton Friedman, providing context for the photographs and their relationship to traditional medicinal plants and South African culture.
A visually impressive publication with strong appeal to collectors of South African photography, botanical art, contemporary African art, ethnobotany, indigenous plants and KwaZulu-Natal cultural material. Its generous format also makes it an attractive coffee-table or reference book for anyone interested in the intersection of photography, nature and design.
