Collins Scottish Clan & Family Encyclopedia by George Way of Plean and Romilly Squire was published by HarperCollins in Glasgow, first published in 1994, with a foreword by The Rt Hon. The Earl of Elgin KT, Convenor of the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs. This is a thick hardcover in red cloth with gilt lettering to the spine, printed in the United Kingdom by William Clowes Ltd of Beccles.
Inside, the clans and families are illustrated with their tartans, heraldry and standards. The heraldic illustrations are by Romilly Squire, with standards by the late Don Pottinger LVO and by Jenny Philips, and full achievements of arms on the endpapers reproduced from The Scots Peerage by Sir James Balfour-Paul. The tartans were supplied by Peter MacArthur & Co. Ltd of Hamilton and the Scottish Tartan Society, Pitlochry, and Collins Scottish Clan also carries photographs by Graham Lees and maps by Iain Robinson.
Collins Scottish Clan & Family Encyclopedia brings together clan histories, heraldry and tartan in a single volume, which makes it a handy desk reference for anyone looking into a Scottish surname or family line.
Collins Scottish Clan & Family Encyclopedia will suit family historians and genealogists, readers of Scottish descent tracing their roots, heraldry and tartan enthusiasts, and anyone with an interest in Scottish history and Highland culture.
Condition – Fair
The book itself is in good condition: the red cloth boards and gilt-lettered spine are sound, the binding is firm and the page edges are clean. The pictorial dust jacket is torn and worn in several areas, with chipping and tears along the spine ends, corners and lower edges, and general rubbing and handling wear. The grade reflects the condition of the jacket; as a working reference copy the book is complete and sound.
