A Directory of Southern African Contemporary Art Practices, Volumes I, II & III: Ceramics, Sculpture and Works of Art by Jean Campbell is an important reference work documenting the rich diversity of contemporary Southern African visual arts at the close of the twentieth century. Published in 1999, this substantial hardcover directory serves as both a valuable research resource and an historical record of artists, galleries, studios, ceramicists, sculptors and makers active throughout Southern Africa.
Compiled and edited by respected art historian Jean Campbell, Directory of Southern African Contemporary Art Practices contains artist profiles, biographical information and reference material covering a wide spectrum of contemporary artistic practice. It provides collectors, galleries, curators, academics, museums and art enthusiasts with an invaluable overview of the Southern African art scene during a pivotal period. The directory includes established names alongside emerging artists, making it an excellent reference for provenance research, exhibition planning and identifying works of art.
Sponsored by Zonnebloem – The Fine Art of Wine, this beautifully produced hardcover was published by Contemporary Arts Publishers and remains increasingly sought after due to its limited print run and specialist subject matter. Directory of Southern African Contemporary Art Practices represents an excellent addition to libraries focusing on African art, ceramics, sculpture, art history, museum studies and cultural heritage.
This copy presents exceptionally well. The laminated pictorial boards remain bright and glossy with only very light shelf wear. The binding is firm, pages are clean and unmarked, and the text block is crisp. Directory of Southern African Contemporary Art Practices also contains a presentation inscription on the front free endpaper from Michael and Catherine de Bussy, adding an interesting association without detracting from the book’s usability.
An increasingly scarce reference title and an excellent acquisition for collectors of South African art books and institutional libraries.
Condition – Very Good
Glossy hardcover with minimal shelf wear, tight binding, clean pages and an inscription on the front free endpaper. An exceptionally well-preserved copy.
