D.F. Malan by H.B. Thom is an important Afrikaans-language political biography of Dr Daniel François Malan, one of the most influential and controversial figures in twentieth-century South African political history. Published by Tafelberg-Uitgewers in 1980, this is the first edition of Thom’s substantial study of Malan’s life, political development and role in Afrikaner nationalism.
Malan served as Prime Minister of South Africa from 1948 to 1954 and was a central figure in the National Party’s electoral victory of 1948 and the subsequent institutionalisation of apartheid. Thom examines D.F. Malan within the broader development of Afrikaner political thought, nationalism, republicanism and South African party politics, making this volume an important source for collectors and researchers of South African political history and Africana.
H.B. Thom was a prominent South African historian and academic, and his biography remains a recognised historical work on Malan. Later scholarship has continued to reference Thom’s D.F. Malan, particularly in studies dealing with Malan, the National Party and the development of Afrikaner nationalism.
Published in Cape Town by Tafelberg-Uitgewers for Nasionale Boekhandel, the volume is presented in black cloth-covered boards with white spine lettering and retains its distinctive minimalist white dust jacket.
