The book traces the establishment and growth of Swakopmund between 1892 and 1919, placing the town within the broader history of German colonial rule in South West Africa. It remains an important and increasingly difficult-to-find reference work for collectors of Namibian history, German colonial Africa and Swakopmundiana.

Published in cooperation with the Swakopmund Museum and the International Lions Club Swakopmund, and printed by Karl Wachholtz Verlag of Neumünster, Germany, Das alte Swakopmund is one of the key German-language histories of early Swakopmund.
