Das Bismarck-Museum in Bild und Wort is a magnificent late nineteenth-century German folio celebrating the life, legacy and public veneration of Otto von Bismarck, the architect of German unification and one of the most influential statesmen in European history. Published in Leipzig by Jacobi & Co. and edited by A. de Grouvilliers with the approval of Prince Otto von Bismarck’s family, this substantial work serves as both a historical tribute and a visual record of gifts, honours, commemorative objects and memorabilia associated with the Iron Chancellor.
Measuring an impressive 36 cm in height, Das Bismarck-Museum in Bild und Wort is richly illustrated throughout with high-quality plates printed on separate leaves. Many illustrations appear in black and white, while others are reproduced in attractive sepia tones. The plates depict ceremonial gifts, decorative arts, presentation objects, historical documents, medals, civic tributes and other artefacts preserved within the Bismarck Museum. Particularly striking are the elaborate title page, decorative endpapers featuring imperial heraldry, and the embossed pictorial binding with gilt decoration and portrait of Bismarck.
Containing 194 pages of German text, exclusive of the numerous plates, Das Bismarck-Museum in Bild und Wort provides valuable insight into German nationalism, imperial culture and the extraordinary public admiration afforded to Bismarck during the late nineteenth century. Today it remains an important reference work for collectors of German history, militaria, imperial memorabilia, political history and antiquarian illustrated books.
Das Bismarck-Museum in Bild und Wort’s large format, decorative binding and historical significance make it a desirable display piece as well as a research resource for collectors of Imperial German material.
