Die Antwoord – I Fink U Freeky by internationally acclaimed photographer Roger Ballen is a striking and provocative photographic publication documenting the remarkable collaboration between one of South Africa’s most influential contemporary photographers and the controversial South African alternative rap-rave group Die Antwoord.
Published by Prestel in 2013, this increasingly sought-after first edition explores the creative relationship between Roger Ballen and Die Antwoord members Ninja and Yolandi Visser, whose unconventional performances, confrontational imagery and distinctive interpretation of South African counterculture attracted international attention.
The collaboration reached a global audience through the 2012 music video I Fink U Freeky, directed by Ballen. Shot in his unmistakable black-and-white photographic style, the video combined surreal imagery, unsettling characters, theatrical environments and the group’s provocative musical identity to create one of the most visually distinctive productions associated with contemporary South African popular culture.
This substantial 128-page hardcover presents a fascinating selection of Ballen’s photographic work, including images that inspired the collaboration and photographs documenting the artistic development of the project.
The book has become difficult to obtain through ordinary retail channels, with copies appearing on the international second-hand and collectable photobook market.
A particularly desirable publication for collectors of Roger Ballen photography, Die Antwoord memorabilia, contemporary African art, experimental photography and collectable art books.
This 2013 first edition is an important addition to any collection documenting the evolution of contemporary South African visual culture.
