Die Engele Ween by Wilbur Smith is the 1982 first Afrikaans edition of The Angels Weep, one of the major historical adventure novels in Smith’s celebrated Ballantyne series. Translated into Afrikaans by Ludwig Visser and published by Human & Rousseau for Leserskring, this substantial vintage hardcover is presented as part of the Leserskring se Moderne Gunstelinge series in an attractive gilt-stamped red faux-leather binding.
Set against the turbulent history of southern Africa, Die Engele Ween continues Wilbur Smith’s sweeping Ballantyne saga, combining family conflict, ambition, warfare, political upheaval and adventure. Die Engele Ween spans different generations and periods of Rhodesian history, beginning amid the struggles surrounding the Matabele uprisings and developing into a broad family epic shaped by the changing political and social landscape of the region.
Smith’s close association with southern Africa and his ability to weave fictional characters into dramatic historical settings made his novels exceptionally popular with South African readers. Afrikaans translations such as Die Engele Ween are consequently interesting not only as reading copies but also as examples of the considerable local publishing history surrounding his work.
The book was published in Afrikaans in the same year as the original English first edition, making this an early translated edition of the novel. Its decorative red faux-leather boards, gilt title, author lettering, ornamental centrepiece and gilt borders provide a handsome presentation that distinguishes it from ordinary trade editions.
An attractive collectible for enthusiasts of Wilbur Smith, vintage Afrikaans literature, Rhodesian historical fiction, African adventure novels and decorative Leserskring editions.
