Die Groot Afrikaanse Familienaamboek by C. Pama is an important and highly useful reference work on Afrikaans family names, genealogy and heraldry in South Africa. First published by Human & Rousseau in 1983, this substantial volume is particularly appealing to genealogists, family historians and collectors of Africana interested in tracing the origins and development of prominent South African families.
C. Pama was a noted authority on genealogy and heraldry, and this work brings together historical information concerning numerous Afrikaans surnames and their associated family histories. Die Groot Afrikaanse Familienaamboek provides a valuable starting point for researching South African ancestry, particularly families whose histories can be traced through the Cape and the development of the Afrikaner population over successive generations. The subject matter encompasses family origins, historical connections, surnames and heraldic traditions, making the book relevant to both serious genealogical research and general family-history enquiries.
A particularly attractive feature is the extensive use of heraldic material. Die Groot Afrikaanse Familienaamboek draws on historical coats of arms from institutional and private collections, including material associated with the South African Library, Africana Museum, Cape Archives, Groote Kerk and Oude Kerk-Volksmuseum at Tulbagh, as well as heraldic authorities in Pretoria. The colourful family coats of arms featured on the dust jacket immediately reflect the book’s strong heraldic emphasis.
Published in Afrikaans, this first edition remains a desirable specialist South African reference book and an excellent addition to a collection of genealogy, Africana, heraldry, Cape history or Afrikaner cultural history.
