Die japanischen Kriegsschiffe 1869-1945 by Hansgeorg Jentschura, Dieter Jung and Peter Mickel is a comprehensive German-language reference work documenting the development, design and technical specifications of Japanese warships from 1869 to the end of the Second World War in 1945.
First published in 1970 by J. F. Lehmanns Verlag, Die japanischen Kriegsschiffe is an important resource for naval historians, military enthusiasts, maritime researchers and collectors of Japanese naval history. Compiled with the assistance of Franz Mrva and Wolfram Müller-Yokota, the book provides an extensive examination of the vessels that served in the Imperial Japanese Navy during a period of remarkable technological advancement and military expansion.
Die japanischen Kriegsschiffe explores numerous categories of Japanese naval vessels, including battleships, aircraft carriers, heavy and light cruisers, destroyers, submarines, gunboats, auxiliary vessels and specialised support ships. Detailed technical tables provide information on vessel dimensions, displacement, propulsion, armament, construction and service history. Numerous black-and-white technical line drawings and ship profiles accompany the reference material, making this a particularly useful publication for researchers and scale model builders.
Covering the evolution of Japan’s naval forces from the early Meiji period through the Russo-Japanese War, the interwar years and the Pacific War, Die japanischen Kriegsschiffe offers valuable insight into Japanese warship design and development. It also addresses lesser-known vessel types and naval projects that never progressed beyond the planning stage.
