Die Sieketroosters in Suid-Afrika 1652–1866 by Johannes Petrus Claasen is an important Afrikaans study of the history and contribution of the sieketroosters in early South Africa, spanning more than two centuries from the establishment of the Dutch settlement at the Cape in 1652 through to 1866. Published by N.G. Kerkboekhandel in Pretoria in 1977, the work originated as Claasen’s doctoral thesis in Theology at the University of Stellenbosch and remains a specialised reference work on South African church and colonial history.
The sieketroosters, or comforters of the sick, occupied an important position in the religious and social life of the early Cape. Although originally appointed to provide spiritual assistance and comfort to the sick, their responsibilities extended considerably further. They participated in worship, pastoral care, missionary activity and education, particularly during periods and in communities where ordained ministers were unavailable. Claasen’s study examines the activities of approximately 52 of these figures and their contribution to developing South African society.
Die Sieketroosters in Suid-Afrika is particularly relevant to research into the Dutch Reformed Church, Cape Colony, VOC period, early Christianity in South Africa, education, missionary history and genealogy.
