Dinner with Mugabe: The Untold Story of a Freedom Fighter Who Became a Tyrant by Heidi Holland is a penetrating political biography of Robert Mugabe, tracing the extraordinary transformation of one of Africa’s most controversial political figures from liberation hero to authoritarian ruler of Zimbabwe.
Holland brings an unusually personal perspective to her subject. Her connection with Mugabe stretches back to the period of Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle, and Dinner with Mugabe takes its title from an early dinner she shared with him when he was still regarded primarily as a freedom fighter. More than thirty years later, Holland was granted an extensive interview with Mugabe as president, allowing her to compare the revolutionary she encountered in earlier decades with the increasingly isolated and uncompromising political leader he later became.
Rather than simply presenting a chronological history of Mugabe’s government, Dinner with Mugabe investigates the people, experiences and relationships that shaped his personality and political outlook. The narrative explores his childhood, family background, imprisonment, involvement in Zimbabwe’s nationalist struggle, relationships with fellow liberation leaders, the transition from Rhodesia to independent Zimbabwe, and the political developments that followed independence.
Published by Penguin Books in 2008, Dinner with Mugabe comprises 250 pages and remains an important title for readers and collectors interested in Zimbabwe, Rhodesiana, African political history, liberation movements and twentieth-century Southern African history.
