Doctor series bundle – Classic early Richard Gordon “Doctor” novels in original dust jackets, including two first editions, forming a highly collectible vintage medical humour bundle from the iconic Michael Joseph series.
1 in stock
A desirable vintage three-volume Richard Gordon Doctor series bundle comprising Doctor at Sea (1953 first edition), Doctor in the House (1954 eighteenth impression), and Doctor at Large (1955 first edition), all published by Michael Joseph, London. These beloved medical comedy novels became some of the most recognised British humorous fiction titles of the mid-20th century and later inspired successful films and television adaptations.
This Doctor series bundle presents attractively in original black cloth boards with bright gilt and white spine lettering still remarkably well preserved. Each volume retains its original unclipped dust jacket, adding considerably to the appeal and collectability of the group. The jackets show expected wear and tear at the extremities, including chipping, creasing, and small losses, consistent with age and handling, yet remain highly displayable and evocative of the period.
Doctor at Sea is a 1953 first edition with the desirable original Michael Joseph jacket featuring maritime artwork. Doctor in the House, the title that launched the enormously popular series, is an eighteenth impression from 1954, demonstrating the extraordinary contemporary demand for the novel shortly after publication. Doctor at Large is a 1955 first edition and completes an attractive early trio from Gordon’s celebrated comic medical universe.
Richard Gordon, the pen name of Gordon Ostlere, drew heavily on his own medical training and experiences to create witty, satirical portrayals of hospital life, medical students, eccentric consultants, and British society. The books remain highly collectible among readers of vintage humour, medical fiction, and post-war British literature.
The Doctor series bundle is an excellent addition for collectors of vintage British fiction, medical history enthusiasts, or admirers of classic humorous literature. These early Michael Joseph editions are increasingly difficult to source together in original jackets, especially in such appealing shelf-display condition.
Condition – Good
All three volumes are hardcover editions bound in black cloth boards and remain in good condition overall. Gilt and white spine lettering remain bright and legible. Original unclipped dust jackets are present on all three books and are in good condition overall with edge wear, creasing, chipping, and small tears/losses at the extremities. Bindings remain secure. The books present very well as a matching vintage set.
