Douglas Haig: The Educated Soldier by John Terraine is widely regarded as one of the most influential reassessments of Field Marshal Douglas Haig, commander of the British Expeditionary Force during much of the First World War. Challenging many of the criticisms traditionally levelled against Haig, Terraine presents a meticulously researched and balanced examination of the man, his military education, strategic thinking, and leadership during one of history’s most devastating conflicts.
Drawing upon extensive archival research, official records, correspondence and contemporary accounts, Terraine explores Haig’s role in shaping British military operations on the Western Front. Douglas Haig: The Educated Soldier examines key campaigns including the Somme, Passchendaele and the final Allied offensives of 1918, while placing Haig’s decisions within the broader context of industrialised warfare and the military realities of the era.
Richly illustrated with historical photographs, portraits and wartime images, this volume offers both military enthusiasts and academic readers a detailed understanding of the challenges faced by senior commanders during the Great War. Terraine’s scholarship has made Douglas Haig: The Educated Soldier essential reading for students of military history, World War I researchers, collectors of British military biographies and anyone interested in the ongoing debate surrounding Douglas Haig’s reputation.
Douglas Haig: The Educated Soldier is an important addition to any military history collection and a respected contribution to First World War historiography.
