Dounreay: The Illustrated Story by Stephen Cashmore is a substantial illustrated history of one of the most significant sites in the development of Britain’s nuclear industry. Published in 1998 by North of Scotland Newspapers in Wick, this large-format hardcover presents the story of the Dounreay nuclear establishment on the remote northern coast of Scotland, combining historical narrative with an extensive selection of photographs and documentary material.
Dounreay became synonymous with Britain’s post-war atomic ambitions and played an important role in the research and development of experimental nuclear reactor technology. The establishment transformed not only Britain’s nuclear programme but also the surrounding Caithness region, bringing engineers, scientists, construction workers and their families into an area previously dominated by traditional rural and maritime industries.
Stephen Cashmore traces this remarkable period of technological and social change, documenting the construction and operation of the Dounreay facilities and the people involved in their development. The book is particularly appealing for its visual record, making it useful both as a historical reference and as a pictorial account of Britain’s Atomic Age.
At approximately 31 cm in height and comprising 180 pages, this is an impressive specialist publication. The title has subsequently been referenced in academic research and is represented in the Dounreay Heritage Collection, reinforcing its usefulness as a published historical record of the site.
An excellent addition to collections devoted to nuclear history, atomic energy, British engineering, Cold War technology, industrial archaeology, Scottish history and Caithness local history.
