Dragon’s Wrath: Drakensberg Climbs, Accidents and Rescues by R. O. Pearse and James Byrom is an important and increasingly collectible work on South African mountaineering history. First published in 1986 by Macmillan South Africa, this compelling hardcover explores the harsh beauty and deadly unpredictability of the Drakensberg mountain range through gripping accounts of climbs, disasters, survival stories, and rescue operations.
The book captures the unique atmosphere of the Drakensberg, one of Southern Africa’s most iconic wilderness regions, and documents the experiences of climbers who faced extreme weather, treacherous terrain, and life-threatening situations. Combining adventure writing with historical documentation, Pearse and Byrom preserve an important part of South African outdoor and climbing heritage. Dragon’s Wrath includes detailed accounts of mountaineering incidents, technical climbs, search-and-rescue missions, and the evolution of climbing culture in the Berg.
Highly regarded among climbers, hikers, rescue personnel, and collectors of Africana outdoor literature, Dragon’s Wrath has become increasingly difficult to locate in collectible condition. The dramatic title, evocative cover design, and strong regional significance make it especially desirable for enthusiasts of KwaZulu-Natal history and Drakensberg exploration.
This first edition hardcover remains a notable addition to any collection focusing on mountaineering, African adventure writing, wilderness survival, or South African regional history. An essential title for anyone fascinated by the danger, beauty, and mythology surrounding the Drakensberg mountains.
