Rutley’s Elements of Mineralogy is a classic reference work on mineralogy, originally written by British geologist and mineralogist Frank Rutley and extensively revised by eminent geologist H. H. Read, with an introduction by G. T. Holloway, consulting metallurgist. This copy represents an early twentieth-century edition of a work that became a longstanding standard introduction to the scientific study of minerals.
Elements of Mineralogy covers the identification, properties, classification and occurrence of minerals, combining theoretical mineralogy with information of practical importance to geologists, prospectors, mining professionals and students. Subjects addressed include crystallography, physical and chemical mineral properties, mineral identification and the economic significance of various mineral species. Rutley’s work remained influential for decades and continued through numerous substantially revised editions; Read’s association with the work began with the nineteenth edition and later revisions continued well into the twentieth century.
This particular copy was published in London by Thomas Murby & Co. The edition history printed within Elements of Mineralogy records successive editions from the nineteenth edition of 1915 through to the twenty-first edition of 1926, helping place this copy within the earlier H. H. Read revision period.
An appealing vintage scientific reference for collectors of geology, mineralogy, mining, earth sciences and natural-history books, as well as readers interested in the historical development of mineral identification and geological education.
